Tulsa Earns 2-1 Win Over Sacramento State
The Tulsa men’s soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Sacramento State on Sunday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 1-1 on the season, while the Hornets fell to 0-2 overall.
“I am pleased with how we grinded it out,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “Sunday games are always difficult, particularly when you had an overtime game on Friday night, but the guys stuck to the game plan and did a good job of executing it. At times our passing and our decision-making weren’t very good, but we created a few decent passes. I am pleased for the guys. Every performance isn’t perfect, but it is early in the year with lots to work on. You have to get results while you are trying to get better and fortunately we got the result we wanted tonight.”
Miguel Velasquez scored his first career goal at the 6:37 mark on a combination from Geoffrey Dee and Munashe Raranje from eight yards out.
Geoffrey Dee tallied a score on a penalty kick in the 20th minute to give TU a two-goal cushion, but Cylus Sandoval got one back for Sacramento State in the 22nd minute.
TU took the 2-1 lead into the break and neither team found the back of the net in the second frame to also make it the final score.
Tulsa had a 12-6 lead in shots, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 2-0 lead in corner kicks.
Velasquez had a team-best four shots, while Ray Saari added three attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes in goal and had two saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, Sept. 4 at Virginia. Game time is set for 6:00 pm Central in Charlottesville, Va.
