Tulsa Earns 3-2 Overtime Win Over Portland
September 13, 2015
Tulsa freshman Juan Sanchez scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute to give the Golden Hurricane a 3-2 overtime win over Portland on Sunday afternoon at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 3-2-1 on the season, while UP fell to 1-3-1 overall.
“I thought we showed tremendous resiliency and toughness,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We played well in the first half, but just gave up that one chance on a counter attack. It was one of those games where we carried the game, but had to chase the score when we gave up the first one. I was proud of the guys for coming back twice and showing toughness on a Sunday afternoon. It was good for Juan and Miguel to score again. We continue to be able to go to our bench and bring on guys that can positively impact the game.”
Erik Edwardson put the Pilots on the board at the 40:06 mark as he dribbled around the goalkeeper and shot into an open net from 12 yards out. The Pilots took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Bradley Bourgeois evened the score in the 59th minute as headed in a corner kick taken by Geoffrey Dee, but Portland’s Edwardson scored his second goal of the contest at the 79:38 mark as he also headed in a cross to give UP a 2-1 advantage.
Miguel Velasquez knotted up the score in the 88th minute off a cross from Zach Jackson to force overtime. Sanchez’ goal came at the 96:58 mark as he headed in a cross from five yards out that was taken by Quinton Duncan.
Velasquez had a team-best five shots, three of which were on goal, while Dee tallied four attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 96:58 between the posts and had two saves.
Tulsa had a 29-7 lead in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 12-1 lead in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 19 against Creighton. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in Omaha, Neb.
