Tulsa Edges Past North Florida, 3-2
After going down a goal early, the Tulsa men’s soccer team battled back, scoring three goals in five minutes, to capture a 3-2 win over North Florida on Sunday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-1-1 on the season, while UNF fell to 0-4 overall.
“I am proud of the guys for coming back and winning,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We showed good character in some spots. We came out poorly, we lacked energy and Sunday can’t be an excuse because you played a hard game on Friday. We had to work exceptionally hard to get ourselves back in it, and we did that in the second half. Tonight was a lesson we needed to learn, and fortunately we still got a good result.”
Off a combination from Collin Scott and Blake Sams, Nick Lodovico put the Ospreys on the board at the 12:28 mark. His shot came from eight yards out on the right side to give UNF a 1-0 lead.
TU’s Chase Bromstedt evened the score at the 59:43 mark as he shot from 18 yards out, and then Gilles Kuhler earned his first career goal just 75-seconds later from 10 yards out to put the Golden Hurricane up 2-1. Kuhler scored again in the 65th minute for the 3-1 lead. Juan Sanchez assisted on all three goals, while Devon Sutton also earned an assist on the last Tulsa goal.
AJ Williams got a goal back for North Florida at the 83:35 mark, but they were not able to get the equalizer before time ran out.
With two yellow cards issued to UNF’s Tawan Seles, the Ospreys played a man down for the final 25 minutes. TU, however, had scored all three of their goals prior to the ejection.
Tulsa had a 16-9 lead in shots, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.
Bromstedt led the Hurricane attack with four shots, while Sutton had three attempts, and Kuhler added two shots. Seven other TU players had one attempt.
Cooper Clark played all 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 7 against New Mexico. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
