Tulsa Falls in Double Overtime to USF, 3-2
The Tulsa men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 double-overtime decision to USF on Saturday night at Corbett Stadium in Tampa, Fla. The Golden Hurricane fell to 3-6-1 on the season and 0-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Bulls moved to 4-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the league.
“I am super proud of the guys,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “I thought we moved the ball pretty well in the first half and we scored a good goal off a counter attack. In the second half, we lost a little bit of the possession, but we fought through it, stayed patient and were able to get a goal in the last minute, which takes great character. It is just a little sickening to lose and I feel bad for the players. We have a tough group and they’ll keep working.”
Joe Ruiz connected with Miguel Velasquez just outside the 18-yard box and Velasquez shot the ball into the lower right-hand corner of the goal to put Tulsa up 1-0 in the 42nd minute. The Golden Hurricane took that 1-0 advantage into the break.
Tomasz Skublak headed in a goal at the 61:08 mark to even the score, 1-1, and then Jose Monge gave USF the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute.
With just 46-seconds remaining in the contest, Ruiz got the equalizer as he headed in a pass from Velasquez to send the game into overtime.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first overtime frame, but Skublak picked up his fourth goal on the year and second on the night in the 103rd minute to give the Bulls the 3-2 win.
USF had a 22-18 lead in shots, but TU had a 9-8 edge in shots on goal. The Bulls also had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Velasquez came in off the bench and had a team-best five shots, three of which were on goal, while Chase Bromstedt and Ruiz each had three attempts. Bryson Reed played the first 37:48 in goal before leaving the game injured, and then Cooper Clark played the remaining 64:17 between the posts and picked up five saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 6 against UCF. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
