Tulsa Falls to #4 North Carolina, 2-1
The Tulsa men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to fourth-ranked North Carolina on Sunday night at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. TU fell to 1-2-1 on the season, while UNC moved to 3-0-1 overall.
“Tonight we suffered through too many poor performances,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We have to be more consistent and tonight we didn’t play up to our capabilities. When you are on the road against a good team you have to have more guys play well. I was happy with Ray, Kay and Bradley’s performances, and we were good in the second half about stopping North Carolina from playing, but we didn’t create enough good chances. It was a hard lesson to learn tonight.”
Zach Wright put the Tar Heels on the board with just 12:34 off the clock and Tucker Hume gave North Carolina a two-goal cushion in the 41st minute, but Zach Jackson got one back for the Golden Hurricane at the 42:15 mark. Jackson’s goal was scored off a combination from Kay Duit and Cole Poppen.
“We had a good counter attack on a nice combination from Cole to Kay to Zach to get the goal before half,” McIntosh said. “Zach tucked it away and it was good to get one back before half.”
Neither team found the back of the net in the second frame as UNC held on for the 2-1 win.
North Carolina had a 13-6 lead in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, while Tulsa had a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Jackson had a team-best two shots, while Duit, Miguel Velasquez, Ray Saari and Zack Stavrou all had one attempt. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes in goal and had four saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, September 10 against Oral Roberts. The game is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
