Tulsa Falls to #8 Notre Dame in PKs
The Tulsa men’s soccer team tied #8 Notre Dame, but failed to advance after a penalty kick shootout, 3-0, in the NCAA Championship Second Round on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. TU ended the season with an 8-6-7 mark, while UND moved to 11-4-6 overall.
Jeffrey Farina put the Fighting Irish on the board as he scored from six yards out on a cross from Max Lachowecki at the 23:15 mark and Notre Dame took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Juan Sanchez was able to get the equalizer in the 62nd minute as he knocked the ball in from a foot out off a shot taken by Geoffrey Dee that bounced off the post. Neither team found the back of the net in the remainder of regulation, or in the two 10-minute golden goal overtime periods to end the game in a tie and force a shootout to determine what team would advance in the tournament.
Patrick Hodan, Jon Gallagher and Lachowecki all scored on their penalty kick attempts for UND, while TU wasn’t able to connect on their PKs.
This was TU’s fifth-straight game that went into overtime and the 11th on the year. This was also the Hurricane’s fourth penalty kick shootout in the last five contests.
Dee had a team-best three shots, while Sanchez, Lesley Nchanji and Miguel Velasquez all had two attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 110 minutes in goal and picked up six saves.
Notre Dame had a 17-12 lead in shots, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-5 lead in corner kicks.
