Tulsa Falls to SMU, 5-1
The Tulsa men’s soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to #4 SMU on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Golden Hurricane fell to 3-5 on the season and 0-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the league.
“I thought SMU moved the ball exceptionally well and they caused us problems early on up top, but we have to do a better job as coaches to sort that out,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We lacked energy tonight and SMU played with a lot of energy, which put us in a hole. We just didn’t play well enough tonight.”
Gabriel Costa put the Mustangs on the board at the 14:13 mark as he shot from left to right from eight yards out off a pass from Knut Ahlander. Garrett McLaughlin added a score for SMU just 82 seconds later off a forward pass from Costa, and the Mustangs took that 2-0 advantage into the break.
Costa scored again for SMU with just 24-seconds ticked off the clock in the second frame, then Ahlander made it 4-0 in the 55thminute.
Alejandro Chavez scored his first goal of the season for Tulsa as he put one into the back of the net off a combination from Marcos Moreno and Rooks Hunter at the 59:48 mark.
Eddie Munjoma drilled in a free kick in the 65thminute for the fifth and final goal for SMU.
SMU had a 13-6 lead in shots, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, and a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.
Harris Partain had half of TU’s shots with three, while Joe Ruiz, Hunter and Chavez all had one attempt. Lucas Cline logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up two saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 5 against USF. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
