Tulsa Storms Past #6 Creighton, 2-1
The Tulsa men’s soccer team upset #6 Creighton with two late goals in a 2-1 win on Tuesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 6-4-2 on the season, while the Bluejays fell to 7-2-3 overall.
“We kept with the game plan and kept plugging away,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We created a lot of chances in the first half, but couldn’t get enough on target, but we were able to continue to create chances. I’m proud of the guys for not giving up. They kept pushing the pace to get the tying goal. Alejandro had a tremendous finish to tie it up and Quinton played a great ball in and Puig did an excellent job on the finish for the game winner.”
Ricky Lopez-Espin put Creighton on the board with 24:57 ticked off the clock as he punched in a goal from one yard out that crossed the entire goal before crossing the line on the far left side.
Alejandro Chavez evened the score in the 86th minute as he drilled in a pass from Munashe Raranje from 15 yards out for his first collegiate goal. Then just under three minutes later Matthew Puig earned the game winner as he scored from 17 yards out off a pass from Quinton Duncan.
Tulsa had an 18-15 lead in shots, while both teams had six shots on goal, and TU had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Puig had a team-best six shots, while Lesley Nchanji added four attempts, and Chavez and Raranje both had two shots. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up five saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 15 against UCF. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium.
