Tulsa Team Tops Missouri State, 1-0
Zack Stavrou scored on a penalty kick to give the Tulsa men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Missouri State on Tuesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 5-2-2 on the season, while MSU fell to 4-3-1 overall.
“In the first half we were trying to play our game through midfield, but all the credit to Missouri State they blocked up the midfield and bossed us around a little bit in the midfield,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We weren’t moving the ball quick enough and didn’t really create any chances in the first half. I’ll give credit to our guys, when we weren’t playing well we held strong defensively throughout the night. Jake made a couple big saves for us tonight. In the second half we picked up the tempo and created more chances. It was a good run by Kay to get to the box and draw the penalty, and Stavrou finished it off. I was very proud of our guys’ work rate and effort.”
Stavrou’s goal, his first of his career, came off a penalty kick at the 65:45 mark.
Missouri State had an 11-6 lead in shots, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal, while TU had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Ray Saari had a team-best two shots, while four others had one attempt.
Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes between the posts, had six saves and earned his fourth shutout on the season and 15th career clean sheet. His six saves moved him past Dominic Cervi on Tulsa’s all-time saves list with 208 saves as he now only trails Brent Salter with 261 saves. He also ties Cervi for second with 56 career games played, again behind Salter with 62.
Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, October 1 against UConn. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Stadium and will be broadcast live on the American Digital Network.
