Tulsa Trio Score Goals in 3-0 Win Over UMKC
Jacob Gooden, Matthew Puig and Ray Saari all scored a goal for Tulsa in a 3-0 win over UMKC on Wednesday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 1-1 on the season, while UMKC fell to 0-1 overall.
“It was nice to not only be at home, but get a good win at home and get off on the right foot,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “We were a little sluggish in the first half, but in the second half we did a much better job. That is what we wanted to do tonight, come out and set the tone and I’m proud of the guys for doing that.”
Gooden put TU on the board at the 25:28 mark as he drilled in a pass from Saari from 12 yards out. The Golden Hurricane’s second goal came as Puig punched in a score from five yards out after going one-on-one with the keeper in the 78th minute off a pass from freshman classmate Fred Mattioli.
“With all of our injuries we’ve had to play our young guys a lot early on, but we know they can play,” McIntosh said. “Maybe they are playing more than we thought, but they can play at this level so it was good to get that combination from the freshmen for the second goal.”
In the 87th minute Saari drilled in a penalty kick for the final score.
Tulsa had a 14-6 lead in shots, including an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
Gooden had a team-best four shots, while Puig, Juan Sanchez and Rollie Rocha all added two attempts. Jake McGuire logged all 90 minutes in goal, picked up four saves and a shutout.
Tulsa will return to action on Sunday, September 4 against Saint Louis. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in St. Louis, Mo.
