U23 WNT roster announced for Norway trip
The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team will travel to Norway for a four-team tournament running from May 27-31 that also includes Norway, Sweden and England. The matches will be held in Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg in the southeast region of the country, about 60 miles south of Oslo and close to the border with Sweden. Both stadiums have artificial turf.
The USA’s 22-player roster features 19 college players in addition to three current professionals, all whom play outside the United States: Daphne Corboz (Manchester City), Chioma Ubogagu (Arsenal) and Kate Stengel (Bayern Munich). Ubogagu and Stengel were members of the U.S. team that won the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan. University of Texas goalkeeper Abby Smith was also on that squad.
The roster features seven members of the U.S. team that got knocked out on penalty kicks by Korea DPR in the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Stanford goalkeeper Jane Campbell, Duke defender Christina Gibbons, Notre Dame defender Cari Roccaro, Stanford defender/midfielder Andi Sullivan, Wisconsin midfielder Rose Lavelle, Florida forward Savannah Jordan and Harvard forward Margaret Purce.
The USA opens the competition on May 27 against the Sweden U-23 WNT at Fredrikstad Stadium, faces England on May 29 at Sarpsborg Stadium, and finishes up the three-games-in-five-days set on May 31 against England at Fredrikstad Stadium.
