UAB Drops 4-3 Decision Against AUM
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team fell victim to an opposing goal in the 89th minute as the squad suffered a 4-3 loss to AUM on Tuesday night at West Campus Field. AUM junior forward Alan Harwell headed in the game-winning goal in the final minutes for the visiting Warhawks.
“I thought early we played pretty well,” said head coach Mike Getman. “We scored a couple of nice goals. We also got a lot of people some minutes. It is important over the long run getting everybody on the field. Getting some of the younger guys experience will pay off for us."
UAB tallied two goals in the second of three 30-minute periods, thanks to redshirt senior midfielder Alex Clay and senior defender Darion Copeland. Sophomore forward Rami Dajani recorded a goal in the final frame, but that would not be enough, as AUM would register three goals in the last 30 minutes of play.
The Blazers and Warhawks opened the match quietly, with neither team putting a shot on goal in the opening period. UAB quickly made its mark in the second 30-minute segment, as Clay came away with the ball in front of the goal and slotted it past the keeper to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Only four minutes later in the 37th minute, AUM knotted things up as junior defender Alexander Neubarth collected his own rebound and put it past the UAB keeper. Five minutes after, UAB converted on a set piece. Freshman midfielder DeAndre Robinson sent a ball into the box off a free kick, which found the head of sophomore defender Joe Rund. Rund headed the ball to Copeland, who pushed the squad back ahead.
“We haven’t spent a lot of time on set pieces, but we did actually practice them this morning,” Getman added. “We had a good service and good decisions by a couple guys leading to a nice goal.”
With a 2-1 lead headed into the final frame, UAB surrendered a goal in second minute of the last period. 10 minutes later in the 72nd minute, junior defender Ian Svantesson chipped a ball to a charging Dajani, who put UAB back on top.
The Warhawks would not quit though and tallied two goals in the final 11 minutes of play to take the exhibition match.
UAB is back in action on Saturday, Aug. 23 in its final exhibition heading into the season. The Blazers will take on Lipscomb at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. Prior to the game, UAB will hold its annual Free Youth Clinic at 4:30 p.m.
