UAB Men’s Soccer Blows Past Marshall, 7-2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB men’s soccer team posted 20 shots and converted on seven attempts to defeat Marshall, 7-2, Saturday night at West Campus Field.
The Blazers (8-4-1, 3-1 C-USA) took a comfortable 4-1 lead to the halftime break, but came back in the final 45 minutes to tack on three more goals for the most in a single game since Oct. 10, 2009 in a 7-1 win against FIU.
“I thought it was a great performance tonight,” head coach Mike Getman said. “That’s a good Marshall team, but tonight I think we were just on fire. Everything clicked and everything went the way we wanted it to. I thought we’ve played well all season, tonight the difference was the ball just went into the goal.”
Five different Blazers found the net led by two each from Freddy Ruiz and Rami Dajani. It marks the second time this season Ruiz has scored twice in a match and the first two-goal performance of Dajani’s career.
As a team UAB took 20 shots, the most since a 2-0 win on Sept. 25, 2013, for 12 on goal. Ruiz jumped on the Thundering Herd early with his seventh of the season in the 16th minute off a Diego Navarrete helper. Alex Clay was then successful on a penalty kick five minutes later to push the lead to 2-0.
Dajani scored in the 37th minute and again with two minutes to go in the match. DeAndre Robinson recorded the first goal of his career for UAB’s final score of the first half, while James Nanje Ngoe also notched his first career score in the 55th minute.
Twenty different Blazers saw action in the win, as redshirt sophomore Hunter Weber and sophomore William White both hit the field for the first time in their UAB careers.
“Everybody on this team has worked their tail off since August and we don’t always get to reward them with the minutes they’ve earned,” Getman said. “So tonight it was nice. We got a few goals and it gave us a chance to play some people, but at the same point we’ve been playing most of these guys fairly regularly. It is part of what we’ve been doing, playing a lot of guys. We have the depth and we’ve been using it.”
With the win, Getman is now three wins away from career win No. 300 and five away from 100 career C-USA victories. UAB remains undefeated against Marshall at home, now 5-0 against the Thundering Herd in Birmingham.
UAB returns to action on Friday, Oct. 24 in a C-USA road matchup at Charlotte.
