UAB men's soccer fall to No. 5 ND
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – UAB’s men’s soccer team fell to No. 5 Notre Dame, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
The Irish (3-0-1), the 2013 NCAA National Champions, posted 28 shots for 11 on goal and totaled eight corner kicks in UAB territory.
The Blazers (1-3-0), who totaled six shots, had multiple chances not go their way as two shots hit off the crossbar and one deflected off the post.
UAB surrendered a goal in the 19th minute when the Irish rushed downfield in transition, making the score 1-0 off the foot of Michael Shipp.
Senior forward Freddy Ruiz had two of the notable chances, missing one off the crossbar in the seventh minute, and again in the 57th minute when the ball just rolled off the inside post.
Senior defender Ian Svantesson had a chance of his own in what was one of the Blazers’ best opportunities of the day when he punched one just high that nailed the crossbar in the 27th minute.
The Irish pulled away midway through the second period off the foot of Jon Gallagher in the 66th minute. Connor Klekota put one on target in the 72nd minute and Gallagher added the final tally in the 83rd minute from 15 yards out.
