UConn Plays to 0-0 Draw vs. Dartmouth
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw with 2014 Ivy League champion Dartmouth on Friday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. With the tie, the Huskies move to 0-0-3, while the Big Green stand at 0-0-1.
The UConn defense extended its scoreless streak to 797 minutes in the 110-minute match, allowing nine total shots. The program record for longest scoreless streak is 961 minutes, which was recorded in 2011. Additionally, redshirt-sophomore keeper Scott Levene notched his 11 shutout in 14 starts, making two saves in the contest.
In total, Connecticut out-shot Dartmouth, 11-to-9, and also held a 6-to-4 corner kick advantage. The Huskies now sport a 23-to-5 overall corners edge in 2015. The Huskies are also unbeaten in their 10 matches, dating back to 2014.
The Huskies have started 0-0-3 just one other time in school history, finishing 17-4-3 under Joe Morrone in the 1985 campaign.
The Huskies had a pair of early scoring chances that came in the fifth minute. After junior captain Jake Nerwinski was fouled from 20 yards out, redshirt-sophomore midfielder Alex Sanchez sent in curler on a free kick but his attempt was cleared off the line by the Big Green center backs.
With 10 minutes remaining in the opening period, junior Sebastian Brems collected a loose ball and started a breakaway that nearly broke the scoreless match. After Brems laid the ball off to Awauh, the junior captain crossed it to Thiam who couldn't quite get off an attempt before the backline closed in to knock the ball away.
Levene made a terrific save in the 58th minute, sliding to the right to kick away an attempt on a 1-on-1 opportunity from Alberto Gorini.
At the 68-minute mark, Thiam threw in a long, arching cross to Sanchez, who put a header on target that was knocked away by Cleveland. 10 minutes later, Jonsson laid off a pass to Awauh, who sent in a laser that went just over the crossbar.
Connecticut came out firing in the opening minutes of extra time, earning back-to-back corners and putting a shot on goal. After Awuah's attempt was saved, Jonsson got a head on a ball but couldn't keep it on target.
The Huskies will make their first road appearance of the season when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard on Thursday, Sept. 10. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
