UMBC and WVU Battle to 0-0 Draw on Wednesday
Morgantown, W.Va.— UMBC men’s soccer got outshot 13-1, but senior Billy Heavner (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made four saves as the Retrievers and Mountaineers battled to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night. The tie moves UMBC to 1-1-3 on the year.
Heavner made four saves in between the pipes, as West Virginia peppered the UMBC keeper with 13 shots. UMBC had the advantage in corners, 7-5, but managed just one shot all night. Even though the Mountaineers had a plethora of chances, the UMBC defense did a great job all night clearing the ball, and keeping the scoring chances to a minimum.
The first half saw both defenses stand tall, as neither side really got much going early. West Virginia had the best chance, getting a shot from just inside the box on Billy Heavner, but the senior was up to the task making a big save.
UMBC got their lone shot of the half and the match from freshman Tre Pulliam (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), who had a shot from 16 yards out, but WVU keeper Jose Santos made the save.
The Mountaineers had two shots and one corner in the first 45, while the Retrievers put up one shot and two corners.
Half two started with the Mountaineers gaining a majority of the opportunities. The best one came early on as they got a pair of shots off inside the box, but both shots were blocked by the UMBC defense.
The Mountaineers would threaten again late as a diving header off a corner sailed just past the left post. UMBC would have a chance as Cormac Noel (Todmorden, England/Ryburn Valley) crossed the ball low across the goalmouth, but it was cleared just before Pulliam could get there.
Neither side had any good chances in the overtime sessions, as both sides fought to a 0-0 draw on Wednesday night in Morgantown.
The Retrievers return to the pitch against George Washington on Saturday, Sept. 17. The match will kick off at 3 p.m. as a part of the UMBC 50 celebration.
