UMBC Strikes First, But W&M Wins in OT, 2-1
BALTIMORE – UMBC men’s soccer’s senior defender Oumar Ballo (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley/CCBC-Essex) registered his first goal of the season, but William & Mary scored two straight to pick up the overtime victory in non-conference action on a chilly Wednesday night at Retriever Soccer Park.
Ballo struck first for the Retrievers 20:42 into the second half, but the Tribe was able to put away the equalizer in the 75th minute and punched home the game-winner 6:18 into overtime.
The Retrievers fall to 3-3-2 on the season, despite holding a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 7-1 corner kick differential, while William & Mary improves to 3-5-0 on the year.
UMBC proved to be the aggressors early and nearly put itself on the board in the 16th minute when Joseph Pratt (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg/Tyler JC) curved a shot from the left wing, but the junior midfielder’s shot sailed into the far post to keep the contest scoreless.
After the break, the Tribe found similar luck, as a shot from Josh West drilled the post before UMBC goalkeeper Phil Breno (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) was able to pounce on the ball to prevent any further threat.
Ballo’s score in the 66th minute came on a header from inside the six-yard box off a free kick from senior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh/N.C. State), his third helper of the season, to put UMBC on top, 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, William & Mary sophomore back Jordan Petitt sent a cross from midfield that was deflected by a UMBC defender and found the feet of William Eskay. The freshman midfielder played the ball over the Retriever defender and sent home his first collegiate goal to even the contest at one apiece.
The Retrievers generated opportunities down the stretch of regulation and into the overtime, but it was a long cross from West that took one bounce and setup the Tribe’s game-winner into the weak-side corner from senior midfielder Chris Albiston.
Breno finished the night with three stops, while W&M goalkeeper Bennett Jones made a pair of stops.
UMBC is set to face two nationally-ranked teams on the road in short order, as they battle No. 21 George Mason (CSN) in Fairfax, Va. on Saturday, Sept. 27 and then face No. 25 Delaware (CSN) on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Newark, Del.
