UMKC Men's Soccer Falls in Double OT to WIU, 3-2
(Kansas City, Mo.) - The UMKC men's soccer squad never gave up, coming from two goals back in the final 20 minutes to force overtime, but the first-place Western Illinois Leathernecks finished it with a goal in the 102nd minute to get the win, 3-2.
UMKC (5-8-3, 2-2-2 SL) will have to wait until next Saturday to find out if it makes the Summit League Tournament, while WIU (9-5-1, 4-1 SL) will be the No. 1 seed after clinching the regular season title.
The Leathernecks came out hot in the opening half, and got a goal from Daniel Lewis in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. He smacked home a loose ball in the box from about 15 yards out. They posted the majority of the chances with a 9-5 shot advantage in the period.
WIU looked as if it would pull away early in the second stanza when Alexis Dominguez found a ball at his feet after a UMKC miscue in the back line. He went 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper, cutting it around him and tapping it in to make it 2-0 in the 58th minute.
The Kangaroos finally started to take control from there, getting a finish from freshman forward Jordan Rideout in the far post after senior midfielder Luke Harman slotted a through ball to him in the box with 20 minutes to play.
The game got extra physical from there, as eight cards were issued in the final 18 minutes and overtime. One of those came in the 83rd minute when UMKC was tackled from behind in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Rideout put it away to cap the comeback and force overtime.
Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, junior Tom Black was issued a red card with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation, putting them down a man for both overtime periods. The Leathernecks were also issued a red card, but it went to a player on their bench in the 84th minute.
The Leathernecks put the game away after a corner kick was headed out by UMKC, but Husref Jupic was there waiting for it, and he smacked it into the far side of the net from the top of the box to take the sudden death victory.
UMKC will face SIU-Edwardsville in a non-conference game next Friday at 7:00 p.m., where they will celebrate senior night at home in the regular season finale.
