Vikings Beat Ducks on Late Dramatics

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Junior forward Tamia Hasan scored a golden goal in overtime, after junior goalkeeper Caitlin Plesesaved a penalty kick with less than two minutes left in regulation, as the pair of players led the Portland State women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Oregon Friday, the Vikings' first win over the Ducks since 2004.
Hasan scored the deciding goal just two and a half minutes into the first overtime period, snapping the Vikings' seven-match losing streak to the Ducks. Hasan's goal also snapped the Vikings' eight-match losing streak to Pac-12 opponents, as the win Friday gave the Vikings their first win over a Pac-12 opponent since they beat Oregon State 1-0 on Aug. 21, 2009.
"There is no one on our schedule that we can't beat, but also every team on the schedule can beat us," PSU head coachLaura Schott said. "What's important is that we play our best on the day and while our first half wasn't great, the second half and overtime was much better today."
Senior midfielder Ariana Cooley started the play that led to Hasan's golden goal, as she won the ball in the attacking half of the midfield for the Vikings (3-2-2) after an initial clearance from the Ducks (4-2-1) on a goal kick. Cooley found Hasan from there with a nice pass through a couple of Oregon defenders, setting Hasan up with a one-on-one with Oregon goalkeeper Abby Steele.
Hasan had pealed off the Ducks' back line in the anticipation of Cooley's pass, and no Oregon defender went with her. Steele had been late coming up to challenge Hasan, too, leaving Hasan with lots of space, and the junior forward slotted a shot inside the left-near post for the game winner.
"Tamia has been working hard on finishing chances and I'm very happy for her that she broke through today," Schott said.
Hasan had been held scoreless in the Vikings' first six matches of the season, but overcame that to record just the second game-winning goal of her career with her score against the Ducks.
However, the Vikings would not have gotten to Hasan's goal in overtime, if not for Plese's save at the end of regulation. With the score tied 0-0 in the 89th minute, Portland State got called for a foul in the box on Oregon forward Bri Pugh, giving the Ducks a penalty kick. If the Ducks converted the PK, they would have lead with just 90 seconds remaining in the match, likely not enough time for the Vikings to find an equalizer.
The Ducks' Lilly Archer took the kick, and tried to place a shot across the ground and into the right post. Plese read the ball well coming off Archer's foot, though, and dove to make the pivotal stop for the Vikings. The ball stopped dead at her touch, and Plese gathered it quickly to avoid any sort of follow shot.
"Caitlin is a great goalkeeper, and today she showed her talent again," Schott said. "A few big saves for her on the day helped us lock the win without a doubt."
Besides Plese's save on the penalty kick, the reigning Big Sky co-Goalkeeper of the Year also made a pair of athletic plays on an Oregon corner kick in the 73rd minute. Plese knocked out a dangerous ball in from Archer initially on the corner, and then grabbed a close, fast shot from Oregon's Ryann Davie during the ensuing scramble in front of goal.
Overall, the Vikings controlled good portions of the match before the late dramatics, as the Vikings outshot the Ducks 13-9.
Portland State got a good chance early in the match, as freshman forward Mackenzie Bean picked the ball away from Steele six yards out from the goal, and sent a shot on frame. A couple of Duck defenders were back protecting their goal, however, and Bean's shot, as well as an ensuing shot from freshman defender Maddie Prehoda were both saved.
Hasan followed with her own scoring chance in the 28th minute, as she got the ball within 10 yards of the right post, but couldn't tuck a shot past Steel into the near post, and her shot went wide.
The Vikings then had three good scoring chances in the second half, with the first coming in the 57th minute, when freshman midfielder Katie Forsee fired a quick shot on goal off a Viking corner kick. Steele was there with the save again for the Ducks, however, and the match stayed scoreless.
Sophomore midfielder Aurora Bodenhamer followed with another chance three minutes later, as she made a good run up the left side in the 60th minute. Bodenhamer worked her way through a couple of Oregon defenders to free herself for a shot from 15 yards out, but Steele saved it once again.
Bean then came back to create another chance for the Vikings in the 75th minute, when she worked her way all the way up the right flank and crossed a ball to Cooley on the near post. Cooley couldn't quite get her feet on it, though, and the Ducks cleared it away before the Vikings could generate a shot.
Pugh started to generate a lot of chances for the Ducks after that. Pugh got past Plese on the right flank in the 81st minute, but no other Duck was back with her and senior defender Kelsey Henningsen cleared Pugh's cross out of play for a Duck corner kick.
Pugh was then attacking again in the 89th minute, when she earned the crucial penalty kick for the Ducks.
The Vikings withstood Pugh's late push, however, and made the plays they need to win the match.
The Vikings will now have nine days before their next match, which will come Sunday, Sept. 21, when the Vikings host San Jose State at 11 a.m. (PT) at Hillsboro Stadium.
