Warhawks Come From Behind to Capture Cup
Two second half goals propelled the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead Sunday in Duluth, Minnesota. With the victory, the Warhawks captured the Advantage Emblem Cup. Four Warhawks were named to the All-Tournament, including Marie Lesperance(Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South), Mackenzie Serbousek (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie),Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and tournament MVP Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek).
The Cobbers started fast, firing a shot on net just 1:29 into the game, but Warhawk goalkeeper Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) made the save. The Warhawks countered with a trio of shots in the next five minutes but one sailed wide, one was saved and the other was blocked.
The Warhawks continued with pressure over the next 15 minutes as they fired five unanswered shots, but it was Concordia that made their way onto the scoreboard first. The Cobbers' Erika Grinde found teammate Emily Wendorff for a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute.
Olivia Hively (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) tried to even the score just before halftime, but Cobber keeper Elizabeth Bitzan made the save.
Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) tested Bitzan once again in the 56th minute but the goalkeeper was again ready for the challenge.
A foul on Concordia in the 62nd minute resulted in a penalty kick and Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) stepped up to tie the game with her first goal of the season.
Three and a half minutes later Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) gave the Warhawks a 2-1 lead when she headed a pass from Carina Krausert (Delafield, Wis./Catholic Memorial) into the back of the net.
With temperatures reaching the mid-90's both teams subbed generously in the final 25 minutes to keep legs fresh. The substitutions paid dividends for the Warhawks who allowed just one shot in the second half.
UW-Whitewater outshot Concordia-Moorhead 14-3 in the match and earned nine corner kicks to the Cobbers' one.
The Warhawks return to the pitch on Wednesday for their home opener against North Park University at 7 pm at Fiskum Field.
