Warhawks Earn Second Straight Shutout Win
VERONA, Wis. - Four goals by four different players resulted in a 4-0 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team win over Edgewood College Friday afternoon in Verona. The shutout is the Warhawks' third in their last four matches and ninth this season.
Freshman forward Anna Boyd (De Pere, Wis./De Pere), the team's leading scorer, notched her tenth goal of the season in the 19th minute to put the Warhawks on the board. Katy Kusswurm (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North)sent a through ball up the middle that Boyd corralled and after shaking the keeper, scored.
Less than three minutes into the second half the Warhawks extended their lead to 2-0 when Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago) scored an unassisted goal. The goal was the first of the season for Schueler and second in her career.
The Warhawks earned a corner in the 56th minute, and took advantage. Alyssa Lennon (Oshkosh, Wis./Oshkosh West) sent the corner to the edge of the six-yard box and Payton DeLuga (Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) knocked it in for her first goal this year and a 3-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, Edgewood put their first shot of the match on net, but sophomore goalkeeper Nina Yonan (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) was positioned to make the save.
UW-W's lead grew to 4-0 in the 81st minute after a shot by Madison Mikalauski (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) hit the post and rebounded to Lydia Jacobson (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) who slipped it past the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
Yonan made one more save with less than a minute to play to finish the match with two saves and earn her fourth solo shutout this season.
UW-W registered 30 shots in the match to the Eagles' four with 16 of those shots coming on goal.
The Warhawks, 12-3-3 overall, return to action on Saturday when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for their final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match slated to begin at 1 p.m. UW-W is still vying for the second overall seed in the upcoming WIAC tournament. Should UW-W win and UW-Oshkosh lose, the Warhawks will earn the two seed. If the Warhawks win and the Titans win or tie, the Titans will earn the two seed.
