Warhawks Fall in 2nd Round of NCAA Tourney
The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team saw their season come to an end Saturday with a 7-0 loss to Wheaton College in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Illinois. The Warhawks, Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions, finish the season with a 16-5-1 record. The Thunder, the 2011 NCAA DIII runner-up, improves to 19-3-2 and advances to the sweet sixteen for the eighth straight season, with national championships in 2004, 2006, and 2007.
The Thunder outshot the Warhawks 15-4 in the first half and tallied six goals. Wheaton's leading scorer, junior Leah DeMoss, notched two of the goals as did sophomore forward Anna Seabolt. Freshman Ally Witt and Senior Laura Karsten accounted for the other two first half goals.
As was the case on Friday in their 4-0 win over Wittenberg, the Warhawks put quality shots on goal. Three of their four shots were on goal, testing Wheaton goalkeeper Hilary Barreto.
The Warhawks only surrendered one second half goal and continued to be persistent offensively. The Warhawks outshot Wheaton in the second half, firing off eight to the Thunder's four in an effort to break through on the scoreboard. However, the Thunder defense remained stout and sent the Warhawks home scoreless.
Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) capped an eight shutout season making seven saves in the game to run her season saves total to 117. Myers' 117 saves is fourth in school history for saves in a season, one behind the third place tally of 118 by Jamie Carollo in 2002. Her eight shutouts places her third in the UW-W record book for shutouts in a season.
Wheaton also knocked UW-W out of the 2011 NCAA Division III tournament. Last year the Warhawks fell to the Thunder 4-1 on the same field in the sweet sixteen.
Senior Chrissy Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) finishes her career with her name several times in the UW-W record book. Tooren finished third in career goals (39), third in career points (96), and fourth in career assists (18). UW-W will say farewell to three other seniors: Kelsey Finn (Glendale/Nicolet), Alyssa Chamberlain (DePere/DePere) and Emily Stocks (McFarland/McFarland).
UW-W's sixteen wins is a school record, and an impressive one, for first year head coach Ryan Quamme. Quamme's squad surpassed the previous record of fourteen set in 2011.
