Warhawks' Home Opener a Success
Kaitlyn Fritsch (Cottage Grove/Monona Grove) scored the first goal of the season for the UW-Whitewater women's soccer team in a 2-0 victory over the University of Dubuque Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. The Warhawks' win is their first of the season as they improve to 1-2-0 while Dubuque suffered their first loss to fall to 2-1-1.
The Warhawks made it known they were going to be on the attack the entire game when Sarah Sedlar (Racine/Case) fired a shot in the fourth minute that was saved by Spartan goalkeeper Chelsea Hawkins. Two more shots in the first fifteen minutes sailed high but UW-W kept the pressure on. In the 28th minute Fritsch found the back of the net for her, and the team's, first goal of the season to give UW-W a 1-0 lead.
The 1-0 lead grew to 2-0 in the 50th minute when Chrissy Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) ripped a shot into the right side of the net from about 20 yards out. The goal is the 28th of Tooren's career placing her eighth in the UW-W record book, one shy of seventh.
Dubuque kept firing, shooting 13 times in the second half, but the UW-W defense and goalkeeper Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) stayed strong. Myers made two saves en route to the shutout.
The Warhawks will look to win their second in a row when they travel to Dubuque, Iowa on September 12 for a game against Loras College beginning at 5:30 pm. UW-W will look to reclaim the "Hawk Cup" in the second annual match with the Duhawks. Last year Loras defeated UW-W 3-2 in Whitewater.
