Warhawks "Hott" in Overtime Win
It was hot Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater, and so were the Warhawks and Dylan Hottsmith (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb). Hottsmith, a sophomore forward, tallied a goal and an assist in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's 2-1 overtime win over the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
After a scoreless first half, the Warhawks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Hottsmith received a pass from Jordan Kayser (Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn) and found the back of the net just 14 seconds into the second half.
MSOE, a 17-game winner a season ago, scored the equalizer just 2:16 later.
The teams went back and forth over the course of the remaining time in regulation with the best chance for either team coming in the final minute. Hottsmith corralled a through ball and rifled a shot on net, but Raider goalkeeper Sean Stelter made the save to force overtime.
The first five minutes of overtime were fairly quiet, but Hottsmith and the Warhawks turned up the heat again in the 96th minute. Hottsmith had a shot blocked out of bounds that resulted in a corner kick. Kayser sent the ball in the box and it found the head of Jordan Wilkins (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie), but the ball sailed just wide of the net.
A minute and a half later, Hottsmith turned on his jets and carried the ball all the way down the right sideline before making a beautiful pass to Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East)who buried the game-winner.
The Warhawk defense did a great job of stifling a potent offensive attack by the Raiders. The Raiders fired off 12 shots, but only five on goal. Alex Buchman (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) made four saves to earn the win.
This was the second match is as many nights for UW-Whitewater, who starts the season with four games in six days. The Warhawks, 2-0, will travel to Northfield, Minn. for a pair of games this weekend. Carleton College is up first on Friday at 2 pm, and then St. Olaf on Sunday at 2 pm.
UW-Whitewater returns home on September 13 to host Benedictine in a match beginning at 4 pm at Fiskum Field.
