Warhawks Shutout Saint John's at Home
A goal in each half provided all of the offense the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team needed as they defeated Saint John's University 2-0 Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) put the Warhawks on the scoreboard in the 21st minute when he slid a shot past the keeper into the lower right corner of the goal. The unassisted goal is his first of the season.
Three minutes into the second half, Joey Pumo(Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) hit a slow roller with the outside of his right foot from the left side of the box, past the goalie, who came off his line, into the bottom right corner of the goal for a 2-0 Warhawk advantage. Lucas Monterroso (Montevideo, Uruguay/Colegio Jesus Maria) assisted on the play.
Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) had an opportunity to give UW-W a 3-0 lead, but his penalty kick attempt in the 78th minute flew over the crossbar.
UW-W outshot the Johnnies 17-11 to remain undefeated at home this season.
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) was tested once in the first half and three times in the second and made all four saves to earn the shutout, his second solo shutout of the season.
The Warhawks, 6-3-3, play again at home on Wednesday, October 4 at 7 p.m. against Augustana (Ill.).
