Warhawks Soar over Ripon, Plese Records Hat Trick
The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team bounced back from a tie after two overtime periods with UW-La Crosse Saturday to defeat Ripon College 10-1 Sunday at Fiskum Field in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
The Warhawk offense got things going right out of the gate putting up three goals in the first 8:45 of the match as Riley Kirchoff, Emily Gerber and Alyssa Chamberlain each found the back of the net for unassisted goals.
The defenses held the opposing offense at bay for the next 22:34 before Gerber ended the "drought" with her seventh goal of the season off of a Kaitlin Traverse assist.
Ripon answered back with their only goal of the match at 34:45 as Kyla Roberts recorded her first goal of the season.
UW-W scored twice more in the first half, both off the foot of Becky Plese. Her back-to-back goals were recorded just 1:18 apart, the fourth fastest back-to-back goals by the same player since play-by-play details are available. The fastest back-to-back goals by the same Warhawk date back to September 30, 2007 when Mary Donohoo recorded goals just 27 seconds apart.
Just 6:38 into the second half, Whitewater's Laren Nashleanas capitalized on a pass from Stacey Schultz to increase the UW-W margin to 7-1. Nashleanas then traded the favor assisting Plese on her third goal of the match and season. Plese's hat trick is the second of the season as Gerber posted three goals against North Park University September 9.
Samantha Hoerchner and Kayla Miller recorded their first goals of the season at 67:09 and 82:41 respectively with Miller's goal off of a penalty kick rounding out the scoring.
The Warhawks rattled off 33 shots including17 on goal and 10 goals, the most this season and second most in two full seasons. The shot, shots on goal and goals count was only topped by Whitewater's win over Finlandia September 26, 2010 where UW-W posted 49 shots, 39 on goal and 18 goals.
Ripon was held to just five shots in the game including two on goal, one of which found the back of the net.
UW-W will open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday, September 21 at 5:00 against UW-Platteville at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. Fiskum Field is located west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center. Free parking is adjacent to the field.
