Warhawks Storm Back to Tie Luther
DECORAH, Iowa - Facing a 3-0 deficit 25 minutes into the match, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team stormed back to tie Luther College 3-3 in double-overtime Wednesday evening. UW-W is now 5-3-3 this season while Luther moves to 4-3-1.
Luther was on a mission early. The Norse recorded nine shots before the Warhawks were able to tally one. Three of those nine shots resulted in goals and an uphill climb for the Warhawks.
Less than ten minutes before halftime, Adam Demaster (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) tallied his third score of the season to make it 3-1 and the Warhawks slowly started to chip away at the Norse lead.
The Norse returned from halftime looking for an early insurance goal. Shots on goal in the 47th and 64th minutes were saved by Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East).
UW-W countered with back-to-back goals in the 70th and 71st minutes by Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) and Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) to tie the match and force overtime.
Mesich and Demaster had good looks in the final three minutes of the first overtime period, but the Luther goalkeeper was positioned to make saves on both of their shots.
Luther flipped the script in the second overtime, testing Lucatorto on two occasions, but Lucatorto made saves on both attempts and the match ended in a draw.
Despite being outshot 12-3 in the first 45 minutes, the Warhawks outshot the Norse 12-11 the rest of the way.
Lucatorto made a season-high seven saves to earn the tie.
The Warhawks will return home for their next match on Sunday, October 1 against St. John's University at 3 p.m.
