Warhawks Streaking With Win Over Pioneers
The 14th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team has been quietly working on something. With a 3-0 win over UW-Platteville Wednesday night in Whitewater they improved three streaks. The first, a nine-game winning streak that propels them to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The second, a three match shutout streak in which they've only given up two total shots on goal. The final, a WIAC 33-game regular season winning streak.
Head Coach Ryan Quamme remarked after the game, "I'm most proud of the three shutouts. The last three games we have really emphasized that with our team."
The Warhawks definitely got it done defensively on Wednesday. UW-Whitewater held the visiting Pioneers to three shots in the match, none of which were on goal.
On the other half of the field, the Warhawks dominated much of the game's time of possession.
A goal in the 13th minute of play by Morgan Beaty (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) opened up some breathing room early for the Warhawks, and they continued to pepper the Pioneer goalkeeper with shots. The Warhawks totaled 20 first-half shots, eight of which were on goal.
Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) increased the Warhawk lead to two on a goal less than three minutes into the second half off of a pass from Marie Lesperance (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South).
Fifteen minutes later a shot by one of the Warhawks was redirected into the Pioneers' defensive net giving UW-Whitewater a 3-0 lead.
Although Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) will be credited with the shutout, she was not tested in the match.
The Warhawks owned all major statistical categories, including a 33-3 advantage in shots and a 13-0 difference in shots on goal. Both the 33 shots and the 13 shots on goal are season highs for UW-W.
Up next the Warhawks will host UW-La Crosse in a showdown between the WIAC's top two teams. Both teams are 4-0 in league play and the Eagles will be looking for an upset. The match will also be senior day for the Warhawks as the team celebrates midfielder Jenna Woodson (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and team manager Erin McIntosh. The match is slated for 5 pm on Saturday, October 17 at Fiskum Field.
