Warhawks Top WashU 2-1 in 2OT
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - An own goal three and a half minutes into the second overtime gave the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Washington University-St. Louis on Sunday. The Warhawks improve to 9-5-4 this season, while the Bears fall to 7-5-1.
Despite being outshot 11-2 in the first period, the Warhawks persisted on offense.
Five minutes into the second half, Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) scored his 11th goal of the season on a pass from brother Henry Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
The lead lasted just under 9 minutes as the Bears answered on a score off of a free kick to tie the match.
Chris Lucatorto (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) came up big for the Warhawks as the half wore on. Saves in the 68th and 80th minutes kept the match tied at one and the teams headed to overtime.
Neither team registered a shot on goal until the second overtime period when Lucatorto came up big again, making his sixth save of the match just 33 seconds into the second extra period.
Three minutes later, Peter Raymonds (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) fired a shot on goal that Bear keeper Colin McCune saved, but the rebound hit a WashU defender and went into the goal to give the Warhawks the win.
The Bears outshot the Warhawks 19-9 in the match, including seven to one on goal.
