Warhawks Win 14th Straight
Marie Lesperance recorded the third hat trick of the season for the twelfth ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team in an 8-0 victory over Marian University Wednesday night at Fiskum Field in Whitewater. Lesperance was one of five different players to score a goal in UW-Whitewater's second straight 8-0 win. The Warhawks topped UW-Superior by the same score last Saturday. With the win UW-Whitewater improves to 17-2 and extends their winning streak to 14 games. Seventeen wins ties a school record set in 2013.
Wednesday was also senior night, and all five of UW-Whitewater's seniors started the match. Jordan Myers started in goal, as she has all season, Kelsey Beld and Kaitlyn Fritsch started in the defense, and Sarah Sedlar and Emily Haeger played in the midfield.
Less than two minutes into the match UW-Whitewater found their way onto the scoreboard. Brianna Reid recorded her team-leading 13th goal of the season on a pass from Kaitlyn Fritsch. Thirty-eight seconds later Lesperance scored her first goal on a pass from Haeger. The point is the first of Haeger's collegiate career.
Carly Pottle and Jenna Woodson strung passes together to find Lesperance in the 11th minute to make it 3-0 and two minutes later it was 4-0 when Jordan Jackson found Sarah Sedlar for her second goal of the season.
Just before the half Sierra High sent one of the Warhawks' nine corners in the game towards the box and Nicole Lorenz headed it in for a 5-0 halftime lead.
Pottle assisted two goals by Jackson in the second half that sandwiched Lesperance's third goal, assisted by Morgan Beaty. Pottle totaled three assists in the game; the last time that feat was accomplished by a Warhawk was in 2011 when Emily Gerber assisted all three goals in a 3-1 win over Augustana.
Twenty-three different players played for the Warhawks and 11 scored at least one point. Jordan Myers and Alison Halweg shared time in the goal but only Myers was tested, making one save early in the second half.
UW-Whitewater Coach Ryan Quamme was pleased with how senior night went, stating, "It was an assertive start and a great tone for the evening. I was very proud that our team honored our five seniors with a complete 90 minutes. Those five have been instrumental in our program's success."
The Warhawks, winners of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season title, are off until next Thursday, November 6th when they will host a semifinal match in the WIAC tournament. Their opponent will be determined by a quarterfinal match next Tuesday.
