Warhawks Win Fourth Straight
Perhaps seeking revenge from a loss in 2014, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team came out fast and strong as they defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-0 Saturday at Fiskum Field. This is the fourth straight win for the Warhawks who improve to 4-1. MSOE, who defeated UW-Whitewater 2-0 last season, falls to 3-2.
After the teams traded shots in the first five minutes,Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) capitalized on a miscue by the Raider goalkeeper to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the match.
MSOE retaliated with two shots on goal in the next five minutes but Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) was there to make the save each time.
Reid had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 19th minute but rolled one up to the keeper who, this time, made the save.
Reid wouldn't make that mistake again … in the 27th minute she corralled a pass from Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) and knocked it past the keeper for her seventh goal of the season and a 2-0 UW-Whitewater lead. After the match Head Coach Ryan Quamme commented, "Brianna is on a tear. I'm happy she's finishing when it counts."
Not only did Reid's goals give the Warhawks a cushion, they came when the team was playing into the wind. Quamme noted, "Goals were important against the wind. I thought it was important to get one or two in the first half because I think the wind dictated play as the game went on."
For the fifth time in as many games, the Warhawks used mass substitutions to keep fresh legs on the field. The second group continued to keep the pressure on the Raider defense and maintain possession for much of the remaining 18 minutes, but the lead remained 2-0 at the half.
The Warhawks started the second half fast, earning two corner kicks in the first 2:35. The second corner was sent into the box by Adria Schueler (Wales, Wis./Mukwonago). Payton DeLuga(Algonquin, Ill./Dundee Crown) put a foot on it and it got past the keeper, but an MSOE defender saved it before it went in. The rebound went to Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) who had a header hit the crossbar and comeback to Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East). Pottle finally knocked it in for her first goal of the season and a 3-0 Warhawk lead.
Less than ten minutes later Pottle struck again. This time she received a pass from Morgan Beaty (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) and drilled it past the keeper to push the Warhawk lead to 4-0.
Reid followed with a fury of shots in the next seven minutes, but didn't finish off the hat trick before being removed from the game. Reid tallied a hat trick in last Wednesday's 8-0 win over North Park University.
Olivia Hively (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) recorded her first goal of the season, and the final of the match, after a knocking in a great ball from Rosales in the 76th minute.
The Warhawks outshot the Raiders 18-8, including 11-3 on goal. Doody made all three saves in the shutout, her second of the season and third for the team.
Up next for the 20th ranked Warhawks is a trip to Mequon, Wis. on Wednesday for a match against Concordia beginning at 4 pm. UW-Whitewater will be home again on Sunday, September 20 when they play host to Wittenberg in a 1 pm game.
