Warhawks Win Third Straight Over Ranked Team
The No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team improved to 8-1 with a 1-0 win over No. 20 Augustana College Wednesday at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Illinois. The Warhawks, winners of seven straight, hand the Vikings their second loss of the season.
The first half was a defensive battle. Augustana's Jordyn Sundberg fired the only shot on goal in the final moments of the first half, but Sara Klimisch (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Indian Trail High School and Academy) made the save and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
The scoreless tie was broken when Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) and Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) connected for a goal in the 55th minute of play to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. The goal is the fourth of the year for Pottle and the assist is Reid's fourth.
With just under eleven minutes to go in the game, Augustana earned a corner kick. Viking defender Bri Frys put the ball in play with a short pass that was immediately passed back to her. Frys sent a dangerous cross into the box that bounced around in front of the goal, but Klimisch snatched it up before any damage was done.
Klimisch made three saves in the match en route to her fourth shutout of the season.
This was the third consecutive win for UW-W over a ranked opponent. The Warhawks topped No. 3 Washington-St. Louis 1-0 last Saturday before defeating No. 17 DePauw 3-1 on Sunday.
The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Catherine at 4 p.m. at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
