Warhawks Win Third Straight with Shutout
An early goal by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team set the tone for a 2-0 victory over Carleton College Friday night in Northfield, Minnesota. The Warhawks improve to 3-0 while Carleton falls to 0-2.
Justin Stanko (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) put the pressure on the Knights right from the start firing a shot on goal in the third minute. Two minutes later Dylan Hottsmith(DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) found Sam Novak (Milton, Wis./Milton) for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks, playing their third game in four days, subbed early and often in the 89 degree heat. The first set of subs came in the 16th minute, and the second set in the 28th. Two more batches of subs kept the Warhawks fresh through the first half as they carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Carmel Nezien (Pouni, Burkina Faso/Lycee De Tenado) continued to keep the pressure on the Knights as he fired a shot on goal in the 55th minute, and another in the 56th minute. After some liberal subbing by both teams in the 61st minute, play slowed down.
After a foul by Whitewater in the 74th minute, Carleton fired a shot on net and Alex Buchman(Waterford, Wis./Waterford) made the save to preserve the lead.
Then the Warhawks turned up the heat.
A shot by Hottsmith in the 77th minute was blocked, as was another by Taylor Ortiz (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in the 79th minute, and another by Jeremy Cohen (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills)twenty seconds later. The rebound off of Cohen's shot fell to the feet of Deklan Corbett (Barrie, Ontario, Canada/Innisdale) who knocked it in for an insurance goal. The goal is the first of Corbett's collegiate career.
Buchman made another stop on a header in the 88th minute and went on to secure the shutout, his second of the season. Buchman has played every minute of the Warhawks' three games this season. He has made 11 saves and given up just one goal.
Twenty-seven different Warhawks saw playing time in the match. Carleton did manage to outshoot the Warhawks 17-15, but UW-Whitewater had the edge in shots on goal 9-4.
Hottsmith has begun his Warhawk career on a tear. He has recorded an assist in each of the first three matches along with a goal in the first two.
The Warhawks will stay in Minnesota until Sunday when they travel to St. Olaf for a match at 2 pm. Head coach Tony Guinn's squad will then return home for a few days off before their next match on September 13 at home against Benedictine University at 4 pm at Fiskum Field.
