FORT WAYNE, Ind. –The Indiana Tech men’s soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 3-2 victory over the Trolls of Trinity Christian on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
It was a feisty first half that saw Tech receive three yellow cards and trail for most of the period, but they were able to fight back and draw even before the break.
The Trolls’(0-2) Rey Bahena got the first goal of the game as he beat the Warriors’ defense to the end line, sent cross into the box that found the feet of Alex Tien who drilled the ball in the back of the net , just inside the far post for the early 1-0 lead.
The Warriors controlled the ball for most of the first half, however, the momentum seemed to swing with the early goal for the Trolls. Then in the 35th minute, a handball was called on the Trolls defense and a penalty kick was awarded. Junior Robbie Kiernan (Dublin, Ireland) took the kick and Trinity Chrisitan’s keeper dove left as Kiernan went right for the equalizer.
With time winding down in the first period, the Orange and Black got two terrific looks as freshman Adam Knight’s (Wakefield, England) point-blank shot was stopped by Nick Fawkes and then freshman Nathan Waits'(Carmel, Ind.) bicycle attempt from just outside the six was saved as well to preserve the 1-1 tie at the break.
Tech outshot TCC 11-6 in the period, holding the advantage on frame as well 8-3. The Warriors tallied eight corner kicks while not allowing one for the Trolls.
For the second straight game the Warriors scored in the first five minutes of the second half, this time scoring in the 48th minute as sophomore Zachary St. Aubin (Manteno, Ill.) sent a ball into the 18 that found the feet of junior Stuart Mitchell (Waterford, England) who beat the keeper to the far post to net his first goal of 2013 and give Tech the 2-1 lead.
After waiting 35 minutes for their first goal the Warriors tallied their second in a two-minute span in the second half as St. Aubin headed home his second goal of the season on a long pass from Kiernan to extend the Tech lead to 3-1.
Twenty-five minutes later Bernard Wilson’s long range shot hit the crossbar and the Trolls cleared the ball enabling them to make a run in the box where the Warriors committed a foul allowing a penalty kick for Trinity Chrisitan. Caleb Steele took the PK for the Trolls and Tech’s Reece Richardson (Halifax, England) guessed wrong as he went right and Steele went left to cut into the lead, 3-2.
The Trolls put a fury of shots towards the Warriors goal but none found the frame in the final minutes as Indiana Tech won their second one-goal game, 3-2.
The Warriors return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 4 for a non-conference game in Bourbonnais, Ill. against Olivet Nazarene University at 7 p.m.
