MALIBU, CALIF. – No. 15 Pepperdine got off to a slow start Friday afternoon in West Coast Conference action at Tari Frahm Rokus Field. Unfortunately for the Waves, crosstown rival Loyola Marymount had no such problem, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes of the match for a 3-0 shutout victory in a Wells Fargo PCH battle.
With the setback, the Waves (11-4-0, 2-1-0 WCC) see their five-match winning string snapped and their 27-match regular season home winning streak halted. The Lions (8-5-2, 2-2-0 WCC) win their second straight league contest and win in Malibu for the first time since 2007.
Cassidy Nicks scored in the sixth minute, followed by Emily Maletis in the ninth minute. Two minutes later Etajha Gilmer made it 3-0 with 79 minutes left in regulation.
Pepperdine generated plenty of opportunities, even in the opening half, which was largely controlled by LMU. For the match, the Waves held a 21-10 shot advantage and held an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. The Lions took advantage of their opportunities and scored on their first three shots of the match.
Amanda LeCave (Windsor, Calif./Windsor HS) had a good scoring opportunity in the 15th minute but the attempt went high. Lynn Williams (Fresno, Calif./Bullard HS) fired a match-high five shots and created some dangerous chances. Callie Payetta (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) attempted four shots, while Anisa Guajardo (Clovis, Calif./Buchanan HS) shot three times, twice on frame.
Jocelyn Blankenship recorded a team-high three shots to go along with an assist for LMU. Brittany Jagger (8-5-2) collected the win, stopping eight shots, seven coming in the second half. Roxanne Barker (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) collected a save for the Waves.
Pepperdine returns to action when it travels south to San Diego for a Sunday showdown at USD. Match time is set for noon at Torero Stadium.
