Western Conn. Holds Off Royals, 1-0
DANBURY, Conn.—Senior midfielder Tracy Sales (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) scored a goal in the 62nd minute of the second half to lift Western Connecticut State University to a 1-0 victory over The University of Scranton in women’s soccer non-conference action Wednesday evening.
Freshman forward Jessica Choronzy (Clinton, Conn./Trumbull) set up Sales’ match-winning goal with an assist as the Colonels improved to 9-3-1 on the season. The loss dropped the Royals to 5-6-2.
Senior Jamie Trayer (Oakville, Conn./Watertown) replaced starter Caitlin Avery (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) in goal early in the second half and picked up two saves for Western Connecticut, which held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-0 edge in corner kicks. Scranton junior goalie Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) made three saves.
Western Connecticut now holds a 9-2-1 advantage in a series in which six of the 12 matches have been decided by one goal.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Saturday, October 13, against Drew University at Fitzpatrick Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. Scranton is currently in sole possession of first place in the conference with a 2-0 league record.
