Wilmington College won every statistical battle except the most important one and came away with a 1-0 loss to Waynesburg University in non-conference play at Charlie Gilhart Field Wednesday night.
The Quakers are now 3-5-2 while Waynesburg has won nine straight to move to 9-1-0.
“We just didn’t put our chances away,” Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk said. “We had a miscommunication in the back that led to their goal.”
Wilmington controlled play for most of the opening half and took six shots to Waynesburg’s three, but the Yellow Jackets’ Courtney Ebersole converted an 38th-minute opportunity into what proved to be the game’s only goal.
“That’s her 12th goal of the season; she’s a good player. She is a goal scorer who takes advantage of her chances,” Spirk said.
Wilmington continued to create chances in the second half. Shots came from the flow of the game and set pieces, but Waynesburg netting went untouched.
For the game, Wilmington out-shot Waynesburg, 17-8, and took seven corner kicks to the Yellow Jackets two.
“We didn’t play badly. We just didn’t play well enough to win. You have to take advantage of your chances, and we didn’t do that,” Spirk said.
Wilmington returns to Ohio Athletic Conference action at Muskingum 1 p.m. Saturday.
“We need to go out and play well. We need to play our game, create chances and take advantage of those chances,” Spirk said.
