FARMVILLE, Va. – Thoroughly dominating its opponent in every aspect of the match, the NC State men’s soccer team (7-3-2) cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory at Longwood on Tuesday evening.
The Wolfpack outshot the Lancers by a 18-2 margin, earned 13 corners to their 0, and held a majority of possession throughout the course of the evening. NC State goalkeeper Leon Krapf was not tested with any shots on target en route to earning the 13th shutout of his young career.
Sophomore David Loera (46th minute) and senior Tanner Roberts (55th minute) scored the goals on Tuesday evening. Loera and classmate Manny Perez assisted on the Roberts goal that doubled the Wolfpack lead.
Postgame Notes
-NC State remains an unbeaten 4-0-1 vs. Longwood. Tuesday marked NC State’s first match, and win, at Longwood.
-Freshman AJ Seals earned his first career start Tuesday evening.
-The Wolfpack set new season highs in shots (18) and corners (13).
-Roberts scored both goals in NC State’s 2-1 win over Longwood last season and has now scored three in two matches against the Lancers.
NC State dominated the first half as playing conditions deteriorated due to heavy rain in the area. The Wolfpack outshot the Lancers by a 7-2 margin and generated eight corner kicks in the first 45 minutes of play. Roberts had one of NC State’s best chances in the opening half, pouncing on a poor back pass by a Longwood defender but missing the right post by inches with his attempt from 10 yards.
Loera got the Wolfpack on the board just 32 seconds into the second half. The sophomore pressured goalkeeper Miguel Bayma, who came out of the goal and missed on his clearance attempt. The ball fell to a Longwood defender, who attempted to clear it from harm’s way, but Loera continued his run and blocked the ball into the back of the net.
Roberts doubled the Wolfpack lead when he tapped in a Manny Perez cross at the left post in the 55th minute. Loera also assisted on the goal by playing the ball up the right sideline to an open Perez.
NC State returns to action at home on Friday, Oct. 12 when No. 1 UNC-Chapel Hill comes to Raleigh. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm from Dail Soccer Stadium with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra. Wolfpack fans are encouraged to wear red to help RED OUT the stadium.
