Women continue hot start with 4-0 win over Capital
After entering the NSCAA Top 25 earlier this week, the Centre College women's soccer team proved worthy of the rankings by defeating Capital University 4-0 Wednesday, Sept. 7 in Danville, Ky.
The No. 15 Colonels improve to 3-0 with their second consecutive shutout and have now allowed only one goal in three matches. Capital falls to 1-3 and has now lost three straight.
Freshman Katie Stevenson (Flat Rock, N.C.) put Centre on the scoreboard at the 28:45 mark in the first half finding the back of the net off for the third time this year. Freshman Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) had the assist, her first career assist for the Colonels.
Junior Amy Hebbeler (Ft. Wright, Ky.) put Centre ahead 2-0 with 30:51 on the clock with her second goal of the season.
Adding to her first collegiate assist, Mitchell later scored her first goal in a Centre uniform dribbling into the box and slipping a shot pass the keeper in the second period for a 3-0 lead.
Another freshman Elizabeth Mason (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) capped the scoring with her second goal in three matches at the 72:27 mark to give Centre the final 4-0 tally.
The Colonels out-shot Capital 18-9 on the night, while both teams had two corner kicks apiece. Senior Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) earned her second straight shutout victory in goal for Centre. Lenz made six saves in the win.
The Colonels will next travel to Lexington, Ky. to take part in the Glenn Hyundai/Transylvania Showcase Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11. Centre will play Baldwin Wallace College Saturday at 2 p.m. and then will play Otterbein Sunday at 2 p.m.
