Women's Soccer Posts 2-1 Win Over Suffolk
The women's soccer squad remained undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action with a 2-1 victory against Suffolk at Pierce Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales got on the board first when senior Berkeley Cecchini-Bond (Uncasville, Conn.) fed a pass to fellow senior Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, Mass.) on a breakaway. Reynolds then buried a shot into the corner of the net to put the Wildcats up 1-0 at the 14:10 mark. Suffolk responded in the 36th minute when sophomore Taylor Miranda (Smithtown, N.Y.) found senior Leslie Hayden (Ross, Calif.) who took the ball up the middle of the field and found the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. The two teams took the game into halftime in a deadlock.
After battling through the early stages of the second half, JWU senior Caitlyn Albert (Merrimack, N.H.) cleared a ball deep in the Wildcats end of the field to freshman Kayla Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.). Sypek's shot was stopped by the Suffolk keeper, however senior Katlyn Gerrish (North Stonington, Conn.) was there to put in the rebound to put the Wildcats up 2-1. JWU would then hold on for the one goal victory.
Sophomore Kara Collins (North Arlington, N.J.) made two saves in the victory for the Wildcats while Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) had six stops in the loss for Suffolk.
With the win Johnson & Wales is now 3-3, 3-0 in the GNAC while Suffolk falls to 2-3 and 0-2 in conference play. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, September 22nd when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a non-conference contest at 7:00 p.m.
