Wright State Upends Panthers, 3-0
DAYTON, Ohio - Wright State University scored in the ninth minute and never looked back, handing the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team a 3-0 loss Saturday evening.
Eric Lynch scored one goal and assisted both of the others to send the Raiders (7-3-1, 2-1-0 Horizon League) past the Panthers (3-6-2, 0-2-1 Horizon League), improving to 6-0 at home in front of a large homecoming crowd of 1,183 at Alumni Field.
"We got off to a rocky start, giving up two set-piece goals on loose balls," UWM head coach Kris Kelderman said. "Proud of the guys for not quitting down 3-0 at half, as they came out in the second half and actually played pretty well. It's tough to do under those circumstances. We still struggle with putting together a solid performance over the full course of the game."
The story of the night was simple. The majority of the quality chances that Wright State got, it turned into goals. The majority of the quality chances that Milwaukee earned ended up getting turned away by either Raider goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer (four impressive saves) or a different WSU player (three team saves) on the night.
The Raiders added tallies in the 24th and 38th minutes to take a commanding three-goal lead at halftime. The Panthers played a much better second half, with the defense stiffening and the offense trying to mount a comeback that just never surfaced.
It wasn't for lack of opportunities. Milwaukee ended the match with 12 shots, but all seven that were on target were turned away. Senior Laurie Bell had a team-best three, including one in the final minute that would have at least broken up the shutout, only to see am impossible stop by Blackmer on the break knock it up and over the goal and preserve the clean sheet.
Up next, UWM takes a break for a non-conference affair, heading to Western Illinois Tuesday for a 3 p.m. start.
