Yale Plays Scoreless Tie With Manhattan
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale and Manhattan combined for 33 shots in a wide-open match Friday at Reese Stadium. Neither team, though, was able to successfully finish, and the result was a spirited scoreless tie.
The Bulldogs (0-3-2) had the better of the play in the first half as they outshot the Jaspers 8-3. Freshman Ollie Iselin had the best chance, but his blast from 25 yards out banged off the crossbar.
“I thought we were very good in the first half,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “We should have capitalized on our opportunities, but we kept in the game.”
The action was even more end-to-end in the second half, and it was the Jaspers who were a bit unlucky. Alexieff Mans fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar in the 76th minute.
Manhattan (1-2-1) had a 6-1 edge in shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods, but none of the chances were particularly dangerous.
Ryan Simpson finished with six saves to post the shutout in goal for the Bulldogs, and Tompkins was pleased with the defensive effort from his team.
“We battled hard and played well defensively,” he said.
Still, the Bulldogs continue to be frustrated by their inability to finish in the box.
“If we keep creating, it will go our way,” Tompkins said. “We have to remain persistent with our approach.”
The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they host Central Connecticut. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m., following the Yale women’s game against New Hampshire which starts at 1 p.m.
