HS: Series of ties leads to ranking shuffle
A couple of ties will unseat the SIMA FAB 50 No. 1s this week.
And those will not be the only major changes.
The key to the state and regional rankings right now is to honor the head-to-head results as much as possible, and that could mean teams move down despite winning -- only because they teams they lost to have taken additional losses. Such is the case in Texas where Hebron's (Texas) win over Marcus (Texas) meant St. Agnes Academy (Texas) had to slide a few spots, as well as Marcus. The fall out also meant Prosper (Texas) and Byron Nelson (Texas), which won marquee matchups last week, jump higher in the state and regional rankings. Similar situations played out in California, as well. St. Ignatius (Calif.) upended previously undefeated St. Francis-Mountain View (Calif.) to jostle the California-North rankings.
Now for the ties -- last week's SIMA FAB 50 No. 1s Coppell (Texas) girls and San Antonio LEE (Texas) boys both tied matches. For LEE, that means turning over the state, region and national No. 1 to Alief Elsik (Texas), which posted a pair of one-sided wins, including a 5-0 victory over Strake Jesuit (Texas). Coppell gives way to Tompkins (Texas) in the state rankings. Allen (Texas) and Monte Vista (Calif.) girls, both ranked in the Top 5 nationally, also tied matches meaning there will be some Top 10 adjustments in this week's SIMA FAB 50.
The state No. 1s are Sunnyside (Ariz.), Montgomery (Calif.), Doral Academy (Fla.), Punahou (Hawaii), St. Paul's (La.), Northwest Rankin (Miss.) and Alief Elsik (Texas) for boys and Chaparral (Ariz.), Upland (Calif.), Montverde Academy (Fla.), Kamehameha-Kapalama (Hawaii), Northshore (La.), Gulfport (Miss.) and Coppell (Texas) for girls.
