HS: Spring FAB 50 rankings, May 29
This could be the week the FAB 50 girls No. 1 ranking will be settle.
Then again, maybe not!
A surprise loss by Notre Dame de Sion (Kansas City, Mo.) opened the door for an Illinois team to finish No. 1 for the second straight year. New FAB 50 No. 1 St. Charles North (St. Charles, Ill.) and No. 2 New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.) enter this week's supersectional with undefeated records. If New Trier or St. Charles North wins all three matches this week, it will end the year at No. 1 in the FAB 50. It is possible that both could reach the state final, which will bring about a rare FAB 50 No. 1 vs. No. 2 state final clash.
If neither team wins the Illinois Class AAA crown, the final FAB 50 No. 1 team might not get determined until mid-June as the teams next in line are in the early stages of postseason play.
BIG MOVERS: BOYS: Baylor School (Tenn.). For the second time this year, Baylor School yo-yos back into the Top 25 following a victory over McCallie School. The difference this time, Baylor will stay there since the most recent result gave this program the state title. ... GIRLS: Grandview (Aurora, Colo.). Grandview's six-spot jump to No. 5 puts this team in the national title chase should the current Nos. 1-4 all lose in the playoffs -- which is certainly possibile given the quality those teams have yet to face. Grandview capped an undefeated season with a win over Broomfield (Colo.) in a state final pitting two undefeated, nationally ranked teams.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 32 Pleasant Grove (Utah). ... GIRLS: No. 32 Fuquay-Varina (N.C.), No. 34 Eureka (Mo.) and No. 41 Whitefish Bay (Wis.).
