HS: Spring SIMA FAB 50, June 14
TOP STORY LINES: Michigan and Wisconsin will crown their champions this week, bringing to an end the 2015-16 high school soccer school year.
Although most of the teams have settled into a ranking order, the results in Michigan could lead to changes that alter the Top 5 on the girls side.
This past week, state finals in Iowa and Virginia provided the most compeling stories. In Iowa, Ankeny Centennial delivered a first 3A state crown since the school was carved out of the former Ankeny district. In Virginia, Battlefield (Haymarket, Va.) girls etched a place in the record book with a third straight large school state title; Blacksburg girls extended their 3A dominance and upped its undefeated run to 65 matches; Mills Godwin (Richmond, Va.) girls gave their coach a storybook finish in a trying year; [Washington-Lee va-m] (Arlington, Va.) boys delivered on a preseason promise when a youth national team member returned to the high school lineup and George Mason (Falls Church, Va.) continued to dominate 2A competition.
BIG MOVERS -- BOYS: George Mason (Falls Church, Va.). George Mason rolled to a fourth straight state title with a 6-1 victory over Bruton. The win helped George Mason move from No. 45 to No. 27 this week. GIRLS: Ankeny Centennial (Ankeny, Iowa). Centennial jumped from No. 27 to No. 14 following a first Class 3A state title for the 3-year-old school. Centennial's lineup featured three players who won a state title as freshmen for Ankeny (Iowa) before the school was split the following year.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 50 South Anchorage (Anchorage, Alaska). GIRLS: No. 10 Battlefield (Haymarket, Va.), No. 48 Stoney Creek (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and No. 49 Glenbrook South (Glenview, Ill.).
