HS: Spring, Winter SIMA FAB 50, March 24
There will not be a repeat No. 1 in the spring SIMA FAB 50 rankings this season.
Last year's boys No. 1 McIntosh (Peachtree City, Ga.) now has three losses in 2015, while last year's girls No. 1 Northville (Northville, Mich.) lost it opening match last week. While neither team was ranked in the Top 10 to start the season in 2015, both are out of the SIMA FAB 50 for now, but have plenty of time to win themselves back into the rankings later this spring.
SPRING SEASON
TOP STORY: A 30-degree swing in temperature on consecutive days in Virginia demonstrated the fickleness of early spring weather. One day, there was snow in Northern Virginia, the next day highs reached into the low 60s. Much like Mid-Atlantic March weather, early spring rankings undergo similar drastic shifts as teams either back the preseason hype, or step aside as new teams climb into the rankings. The girls at Franklin (Elk Grove, Calif.) were the big winner last week, knocking off former SIMA FAB 50 Top 25-ranked Davis (Davis, Calif.) 1-0. The result sent Franklin from unranked to No. 20 this week, while Davis settled in at No. 38.
BIG MOVER: BOYS: Irmo (Columbia, S.C.). This longtime state power moved up nine spots in this week's rankings, checking in at No. 29. Irmo is one of two remaining undefeated teams in South Carolina's Class 4A. GIRLS: Several teams moved up four spots, but Cosby (Midlothian, Va.) posted the most attention-grabbing result of those teams, winning its opener 9-0.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 28 Campbell (Smyrna, Ga.), No. 31 Robinson (Fairfax, Va.), No. 32 Deep Run (Glen Allen, Va.), No. 36 Independence (Thompson's Station, Tenn.), No. 37 Omaha South (Omaha, Neb.), No. 38 Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), No. 42 Tahoma (Covington, Wash.), No. 46 J.L. Mann (Greensville, S.C.), No. 47 Albemarle (Charlottesville, Va.), No. 48 Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma, Wash.) and No. 49 Copper Hills (West Jordan, Utah). GIRLS: No. 20 Franklin (Elk Grove, Calif.), No. 26 Conant (Hoffman Estates, Ill.), No. 36 Lyons Township (LaGrange, Ill.), No. 39 Normal West (Normal, Ill), No. 40 Northgate (Newnan, Ga.), No. 49 Fairview (Boulder, Colo.) and No. 50 Centreville (Clifton, Va.).
WINTER SEASON
TOP STORY: It's basically a four-team race for Winter girls No. 1: a trio of Texas schools -- Coppell (Coppell, Texas), Highland Park (Dallas, Texas) and Hebron (Carrollton, Texas) -- and Florida No. 1 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). The Texas schools start postseason play this week, and the three top-ranked Texas programs are vying for the Class 6A title ... meaning they will have to knock out each other, or get knocked out along the way.
BIG MOVER: GIRLS: The Plano West (Plano, Texas) girls move back into the SIMA FAB 50 Top 25 following a win over previous No. 2 Hebron. BOYS: No boys team moved more than one place in this week's rankings.
NEWCOMERS: BOYS: No. 50 Alief Elsik (Houston, Texas). GIRLS: No. 15 Plano West (Plano, Texas).
