HS: State, region rankings, April 3
Har-Ber (Ark.) boys and Notre Dame de Sion (Mo.) and Tulsa Union (Okla.) girls hoisted tournament trophies over the weekend, and all three improved their national standing this week.
Har-Ber's victory at the BK Invitational in Oklahoma proved quite a statement, not only for the team but also the state of Arkansas, which now has teams occupying three of the top four spots in the South-Central Boys Region rankings. It's the strongest-ever showing for the Arkansas programs.
On the girls side, Notre Dame de Sion knocked off SIMA FAB 50 No. 1-ranked St. Thomas Aquinas (Kan.) en route to Bob Durig Mo-Kan championship. The victory vaults Notre Dame de Sion to No. 1 in Missouri. Meanwhile, Tulsa Union posted three straight shutout victories to win the girls version of the Bishop kelley Invitational. While Tulsa Union remains No. 2 in the state and region behind Owasso, the team's national ranking should jump Tuesday with a slew of upsets in the Top 25.
In the last of the winter season, Texas is through two rounds of postseason play and quicly will knock out three more rounds this week -- taking the 6A, 5A and 4A tournament down to the state semifinals. The boys side saw several projected challengers bounced from the 6A tournament, including previously undefeated Strake Jesuit (Texas) and one-loss Alief Elsik (Texas). The marquee match saw Coppell (Texas) run out to a commanding lead in a 6-3 victory over The Woodlands (Texas). On the girls side, all the favorites won, leaving almost nothing changed in the state or region rankings.
