LEAD STORY: 

Sisters Emma and Shannon Lee netted the first two goals as Battlefield (Haymarket, Va.) rolled to a 4-0 Group 6A girls state final win over Frank Cox (Virginia Beach, Va.) on Saturday for a third straight large-school state title.

Battlefield joins West Springfield (Springfield, Va.) -- 1991-1993 -- as the only schools to win three straight large school titles in Virginia. The one-sided affair also reinforced Northern Virginia's position as the state's hub for top girls soccer. Northern Virginia programs have won 30 of the 33 large-school state titles ever awarded in the state.

In other interesting story lines from Virginia's finals last week, [Washington-Lee va-m] (Arlington, Va.) delivered a boys 6A state title, one that seemed highly possible when Virginia signee Lucas Mendes skipped his final season in the Development Academy to join an already loaded lineup, which included UMass-Lowell signee Maycol Nunez. The Generals defeated First Colonial (Virginia Beach, Va.) 3-1 in the final featuring two SIMA FAB 50 Top 10 teams. ... Blacksburg girls soccer team scored six first-half goals en route to a 6-0 thrashing of Culpeper in the 3A final, running the program's undefeated streak to 65 matches. Catie Walters, a junior, scored three goals.
