HS: State, region rankings, March 6
One season is winding down, another is heating up.
March starts the overlap with two sets of state, region and SIMA FAB 50 rankings as the winter season starts its final month of play while spring teams are getting geared up.
There was plenty of big news this week, so here's a quick weekend wrapup:
* Folsom (Calif.) boys, after running its record to 21-0 with a section semifinal victory, was DQed from the event for using what the section determined was an ineligible player. With Folsom out of the running, Jesuit (Carmichael, Calif.) snagged yet another section title for the state's all-time winningest coach, Paul Rose. Folsom had defeated Jesuit during the regular season. Our rankings follow the logic of the team holding the trophy has earned the higher ranking, so Jesuit moves ahead of undefeated Folsom.
* Speaking of surprises, the boys team at El Toro capped a stunning run through the CIF Southern Section Division I tournament with a shootout win over Redlands East Valley (Redlands, Calif.). El Toro, despite winning its league title, entered the postseason with a losing record before rolling off five straight victories -- three of them against SIMA FAB 50 Top 25 teams -- to win the section crown and a berth in the Southern Regional tournament.
* Transitioning to spring soccer, both of last year's SIMA FAB 50 No. 1 finishers suffered rare defeats last week. Oak Mountain (Birmingham, Ala.) lost to Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) 3-2, ending Oak Mountain's 43-match undefeated streak. Oak Mountain won the final six matches of the 2015 season to claim a state title, followed that with a 28-0-2 showing last year, and was 5-0-2 entering the match with Brookwood. In Oklahoma, Tulsa Union (Tulsa, Okla.) had a commanding advantage in shots, but failed to find the net in what ended up as a shootout loss to Broken Arrow (Okla.). The setback ends Tulsa Union's win streak at 36 matches and dents the team's chances at a SIMA FAB 50 three-peat.
