LEAD STORY:
Bearden (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Christian Brothers (Memphis, Tenn.) are perennial boys soccer state title challengers, but this wasn't shaping up as one of those years -- until last week.
Bearden caught a break when top-seeded and defending champ [Germantown Houston tn-m] (Germantown, Tenn.) was upset in the state semifinals and pulled away for a 5-2 state final win over Ravenwood (Brentwood, Tenn.). Gabe Alvarez scored three goals on four shots in the state's large-school state final. Bearden entered the week ranked No. 9 in the state.
In the Division II-AA bracket, three of the four teams entered the week ranked in the SIMA FAB 50, but it was unranked Christian Brothers that posted a pair of one-goal wins to secure a state title.
Virginia and Washington also welcome new state No. 1 teams this week as First Colonial (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Snohomish were upset in postseason play. First Colonial gets a second chance as it still advances to this week's region tournament. Defending state champ Snohomish, however, settled for a fourth-place finish at the state tournament.
In girls soccer, Grandview (Aurora, Colo.), Laramie (Wyo.), Shawnee Mission West (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) and Weddington (Matthews, N.C.) secured state No. 1 rankings with state titles last week.
